SS The Dragon’s Quest for Hopper:: Chapter 10 : Jim and Dominik

The Dragon’s Quest for Hopper starts off as any other low brow elf seeking a real place in life.  He didn’t think the real place would be babysitter to a dragon.  Part of him wishes the dragon mother decided on eating him instead of shoving him into this new role.  What was he thinking getting involved with Linda or Hartliebe or thinking he deserved more in life than running a beer company.  Beer is his life.  Or it was.  His life now seems a lot different.  And scary.

Jim and Dominik

The bar this time is owned by a comely elf.  He has everything going alright.  He even had decent beer.  His name is Jim.  Cyro dislikes him.  Mostly because I treat him as a friend.  The dragon has started to hate my actions I force on him.  “Stop being a child.”

“I am but a babe.  You cannot expect me to…”

I rub my forehead.  “I am nothing but your babysitter.”

“Mother doesn’t trust me.  That’s all.  And Cat cannot watch me twenty four seven anymore.”  Cyro waves his hand around.  “And I don’t want her to.”

“Why do you hate her?”

“Why don’t you?”  He glares at me.

Jim places food before us.  “I hear you talking about someone.  Makes me interested.  Care if I join?”  He looks between us.  After a few seconds of silence, he plops into a chair.  “Who is the lovely elfin maiden you speak of so fondly?”

“Fondly?”  Cyro coughs out.  “She is no fun at all.”

“Says the child.”  I fold my hands thinning my eyes at him.  “You act so tough and mighty, but my wand out weighs you.  Even Dorothy took you down a few pegs.  Should we go back to her?”  He turns away not answering me.

The bar tender grins at me.  “So is she a beauty?  Is that what causes such a trouble?”

“She is a beauty.  But I do believe insane, vicious, dangerous, and a slight impossible to get along with.”  I add with contempt.  I dislike the idea of agreeing with Cyro, but when it comes to Cat, I’d prefer not to see her again myself.

The sharp voice behind us is like a kick in the balls, “Those are some rude comments coming from a child.”  I look at Cat standing there in all her glory.  Jim winks at her before moving back to his duties.  “I came to see how you were holding up and get insulted.  I should tell Hartliebe.”

“Tell Mother what?”  Cyro snarls.  “That I hate you?  ‘Cause she knows that already.  Why else did I gain freedom from you?”  The dragon slams the table rocking a tremor in his anger.  I grab the bottle on the table before it smashes to the floor.

“You are playing.”  Cat lays hands on the table leaning forward to face off against the dragon baby.  “Hartliebe will not let you cause harm or disrupt anything.”

“I will not live in the cave!”  Cyro stands shaking things again.  I hear a glass shatter, but keep my eyes on the danger in the room.

“Outside, Cyro.”  Cat points to the door.  “Before I make you.”  She looks powerful standing up to the dragon.  She does not need a wand like most magical elves.  I can tell that.  But I really do not wish to learn how capable she really is.

And personally I would like to eat and drink while they fight.  Once Cat gets Cyro outside, I hold a finger up to the bar tender.  “Jim?  How about another plate?”

“Aye.”  He nods to me heading to get me more.  I’ll deal with those two later.  First food and drink.

The meal ends before I finish everything.  Cat comes in without Cyro this time.  He could not have gone far.  She places two hands on the table before me.  “He flew off.  Where is he going?  Why are you not going with him?”

“Probably because you pissed him off enough.  I am not required to follow him every step of the way.”  I stand knowing my meal will not be possible to continue.  I pat my pockets until I find a collection of coins.  I had no idea I had coins there, but out comes enough to pay for the meals.  I drop them on the table.  Out the door, I look about.  I know where we will go next.  Cyro already explained it to me.  Veronica probably has the key.  She was once a powerful witch.  After years of not using her magic, she will be weak enough to barter with.

“Where will he go?”  Cat follows me flitting around me like crazy.  “I cannot just return to Hartliebe without knowing you can cover his tracks.”

A loud sigh has me pick up speed.  She can still outrun me, so could Cyro.  I will not catch up to the dragon if Cat is beside me.  He’ll refuse me.  “Look.  He hates you.  Why else would he leave without me?  The reason he was letting me rest was because I had to be with him.  He does not want you around.  Give me a little freedom and I will catch up to him.  He won’t let me within fifty yards if you are around too.”  I motion her to back off.

“Pissy just like him.”

“Lay off.  You act so high and mighty, but are still nothing but an elf.”  My words have her slow a bit.  Not leave me completely, but her looks dim.

“I am not just an elf.”  She scoffs looking away.  “I have blood.”

“Leave us alone for a while.  I got this.”  I wave the wand at her.  “And I know if trouble comes, we’ll suffer for it.”  She stops as I fly onward.  I do not look back glad to be done with her.

After fifteen minutes, Cyro ends up beside me pouting.  A vent about Cat will come during the flight.  Whatever, I’d rather have Cyro than Cat.  “Thanks for the meal.”

Cyro pauses in his vent.  A long face reaches me before a nod.  “I need to remember to feed you.”

“I’ll remind you.  But it seems I do not need food when I am around you.  At least not nearly as much as I used to.”

“Dragon Magic does that.  Mother protects you.  I can’t.”  He rubs his face.  “I cannot even remember to feed my things.”

“As I said before.  I am your babysitter.  It is my job to remember feedings.  Let’s get to the Witch.  She’ll be glad to have people to annoy.”

“I hope she doesn’t hurt you.  I’m sorry I didn’t notice you get shot before.  Did it hurt?”

“Not as much as it should’ve.  And it healed better than I ever could before.”  I glance his way realizing the real power hidden within him.  This is dragon magic.  He is a dragon.  One day he will become like his mother.  I will never be like my parents.  I wonder who will take over.

We stop once during the twenty four hour flight.  Cyro begs me to eat.  I will not remind him I should sleep too.  Eventually I will need sleep.  Elves can withstand a lot without rest, but I have a feeling he will run me longer if I do not make a comment.
