The Dragon’s Quest for Hopper starts off as any other low brow elf seeking a real place in life. He didn’t think the real place would be babysitter to a dragon. Part of him wishes the dragon mother decided on eating him instead of shoving him into this new role. What was he thinking getting involved with Linda or Hartliebe or thinking he deserved more in life than running a beer company. Beer is his life. Or it was. His life now seems a lot different. And scary.

The pair of elves walking to us with baskets in hand has me stand immediately. Joshua, sloshed from the dragon champagne, mutters about helping them. The older female waves a hand with whispers. Soon Joshua is hung upside down in the tree. He turns red, which looks unbelievably silly.
“Who are you?” The Witch, I assume, looks between me and Cyro. It is like she cannot tell who is more important. Well that is far different than when Cat saw me the first time. I was considered a shepherd’s apprentice back then. Have I grown? “Dragon and his pet.” No, just a bit more noticeably owned. “Why are you here?”
“To get the key for Terrick Isle.” Cyro says still on the ground. “I was told you have it.”
“I do. And I do not.” She taps her companion’s arm. “Let Joshua down from the tree and bring everything inside. I suggest making sure he does not touch anything.”
“Yes, Mother.” She nods her head. A few quick movements have Joshua dropping to the ground and her taking the various baskets inside. There was no noticeable spells done, yet that had to be spellwork. “Hurry Joshua.”
“Yes, Heather.” He rubs his head following the younger inside.
Now that the witch’s children are inside, she turns to Cyro. “No one is allowed to visit the Isle of Terrick. The country put the key in my hands to stop any foolish person from trying.”
“Your nation is for the elves. I am a dragon. I do not fall under their jurisdiction.” Cyro yawns finally moving to offer a hand for her to shake. “I am Dragon Cyro. This is my babysitter, Dominik.”
The witch shakes his hand lightly then turns to me. “So you control him, then. Bring him back to his cave where he would be safe.”
My eyebrow rises as I lean on one foot. “You mean I should make a baby DRAGON do something he doesn’t want to do? Even if I am in control, I can only do so much. This is not what I will waste my energy on.”
She mutters walking to the door half ignoring us. “Clear the yard and maybe I will help you. Maybe.” As her door shuts, the yard changes completely.
It is not wild grasses and dirt paths with one lone table. It turns into a volcano. We hover, flight became required, over a bubbling volcano. All of the items that were just sitting there have fallen into the lava below us. I glance to Cyro who seems less than bothered. My eyes return to the cottage, the now lone cottage. It stands mid air above an active volcano. This is the Witch’s power. And all we want is the stupid key to enter the stupid isle. Plus after this I will need to get Cyro to find the exit point before we fly off with the map. That I will force him to follow. I do not want to be trapped there.
“She’s a nice elf.” Cyro lazily flies around the place collecting various flowers and rocks. “She gave us everything we need for the key.”
“She… What? Cyro this is crazy.” I motion around us. “A volcano appeared below us. Just appeared.”
“Yeah. Even I couldn’t’ve done that. Or you for that matter.” He blinks indifferent. “Next you’ll be surprised when it returns to the trio of cottages we were at before.”
Covering my face with my hands, I try to think. Everything about this spell makes me annoyed. Anger comes with Cyro’s indifference. “If you can turn it back, then do it.”
“Oh. Do you think that’s all she wants from us?” Cyro blinks looking at the volcano and his collection of flora. “I thought she wanted us to collect the pretty things. When Mother says to clean up, we collect the pretty things and put them away.”
“Dragon Cyro! Make it go back to the dirt and grass.” I point at the volcano ready to activate. “We do not have an impressive amount of time.”
“Don’t need time. Or even space for that matter. Do you know nothing of dragon magic?” Cyro blinks. One snap of his fingers and we are back where we were before. “Dragon magic is about manipulating time and space. Once we know it, we can change it to our liking.” His head tilts as he walks to me. “Have you never used magic before meeting me?”
“No. Never.” Although it has been done to me.
A quick nod of understanding leaves us moving to the cottage. “I guess not all creatures use magic on a whim’s notice. Let’s get this key and continue on. I feel Terrick is getting closer and closer.”
Exhaling, I try to ignore the feeling of imminent doom from only a few seconds ago. Dragon magic is scary. And this witch is like Jay, only older. The thought of my friend wavers in my mind. After Terrick, we will find Hartliebe. She will know about my friends back home. Maybe we can even go see them.
