SS The Dragon’s Quest for Hopper:: Chapter 20 : Thomas and Dominik

The Dragon’s Quest for Hopper starts off as any other low brow elf seeking a real place in life.  He didn’t think the real place would be babysitter to a dragon.  Part of him wishes the dragon mother decided on eating him instead of shoving him into this new role.  What was he thinking getting involved with Linda or Hartliebe or thinking he deserved more in life than running a beer company.  Beer is his life.  Or it was.  His life now seems a lot different.  And scary.

Thomas and Dominik

While flying, we spot an elfin male walking the same path as us.  Although not uncommon in normal areas, he is walking desert like conditions.  I want to stop and question why, but Cyro looks oblivious.

That is until the male calls out to us in passing, “Excuse me!”  Cyro stops interested in the strange walker.  I land beside him.  “Do you have any water?”

“Water?”  I turn to Cyro.  Water would be easy to create, although we do not carry any right now.  “Are you thirsty?”

He glances at me then at Cyro.  “Never mind.  This old fool should never request such items from such fine strapping gentlemen.”  He just starts walking on.

Cyro takes my arm denying me flight to walk after the man.  Why would this one walker interest the dragon?  “Why not fly?”

He glances at us again with vague interest.  “I cannot fly.”

Now I am intrigued.  “Cannot fly?  But you are an elf.”

“An elf with broken wings.”  He moves his desert scarf from his shoulders to show off wings that are shriveled and bent.  What happened there?  “Wild owlbear.”

Cyro shudders at the image.  “I’m Cyro.  This is Dominik.  Who are you?”  Properish greetings, that’s good.

“Thomas.”  He points at the distance.  “I walk this path back and forth for the past six years since I lost my chance to fly.  Sometimes the wind gets wild enough to make me fly.  Although landing hurts.”

“You want to fly then?”  I look to Cyro.  The dragon shows me nothing of his desires.

“I cannot fly.  It is not a manner of…”

My hand grabs for the wand like second nature now.  “Fix.”  The wings though do not easily fix.  The old man smiles at me.  “Flex.  Unbend.  Heal.”  None of my words work.

“Only a real spell will fix a thing such as wings.  Wings are magic.  You cannot treat them as inanimate objects.”  Oh.  He pats my arm like I am only an innocent.  “You should move on.”

“The water, then?”  That takes no effort to offer him a cup, but he waves it off.  “You just want to walk then?  To the next town?”

Thomas shrugs walking on.  His lack of words has me turning to Cyro.  The dragon has his lips pursed and eyes on the broken elf.  After a while, we slowly follow him.  Our meandering walk looks dull and yet Cyro’s eyes are filled with passion.  This one elf has tricked Cyro into walking when all he wants to do is run for Terrick.  Nothing I did would slow him down.

“I can make you fly.”  Cyro finally reaches Thomas.  “I can make you soar up in the clouds.”  On him.  Or by spell.  He can do both.  Does Thomas know about Cyro being a dragon?  Some guess right away.  Others do not catch on until we tell them.

“No thank you.  I am fine walking.  I learnt a lot about pace and control after my wings broke.”  He smiles at us.  “You may run along, though.  Fly at the unbelievable pace you set yourself.  Although I may be concerned at your speed with wasting energy.”  He motions us onward without him.  Cyro seems very unwilling to move on.  “You can walk with me, though.  I will not deny you.”

The journey continues with us walking behind the broken elf.  No one speaks.  Cyro thinks hard enough that I may smell burnt brain cells, but no one says a thing.  I try not to be bothered by the walk, but after using my wings more than my legs, this much walking actually hurts.  Hours by foot.  Nothing but desert in sight.  No wind to cool off the heat.  No person to create conversation with.  Minus the two who aren’t talking.

Ignoring them does not help.  After a while, my feet hurt so much my wings jump out for me to not use the injury.  Cyro does not even glance my way when I wing ahead of them.  A final head shake and I fly on to the town they are headed to.  I will find a place to rest the night and find proper food to eat.  Magic can only help me so much.
