The Dragon’s Quest for Hopper starts off as any other low brow elf seeking a real place in life. He didn’t think the real place would be babysitter to a dragon. Part of him wishes the dragon mother decided on eating him instead of shoving him into this new role. What was he thinking getting involved with Linda or Hartliebe or thinking he deserved more in life than running a beer company. Beer is his life. Or it was. His life now seems a lot different. And scary.

“Thanks.” That is from Dee. She frowns at her sister’s home. “The party went a little crazy last night. It seems things got worse after you left. I had already gone home.” She sighs taking the pile of plates I had collected. “Did you rest up enough?”
“Yeah. I’m fine for now.” I follow her to where Derrick is washing dishes with Melanie and Rich. These two seem very useful. The other ones were mostly trying to get their mother to wake up. It hasn’t worked yet. “Hey Derrick. How’s…?”
“More dishes? What went on after I took the kids to bed?” He growls at the new collection of dirty dishes. Dee frowns with him. “Did the party get worse? I thought it was bad when I left.”
“Elves love to party.” I knew that quite well. “Is it true the boat is ready?” I turn to Dee.
Her mood lifts a bit. “Yes. Our ship, The DonDiego will be ready to sail the moment we get the go ahead from Captain.”
“How many are going?” I ask as we walk back through the house cleaning things.
“The thirteen Mad Hatters, you and your two friends, and the dragon family. It makes for a large crew of twenty three. Captain feels compelled to bring everyone along. The trip will be safer that way.” Dee bites her lip holding the pile of cups and plates before her. “I thought she would stay behind. But she refused every comment of that sort. She wants to see the Isle of Terrick herself. I think Jess will be captain for the trip though.”
“Even if Dorothy is old and a bit frail, she is no pushover.” I return and get a smile from Dee.
“I am not that young either. I am tempted to stay here and watch Zee’s house. She has everything together though. I am concerned about the survival chance. I know someone will die during this. That’s how these trips go.” Dee walks solemnly back to Derrick. After another negative comment from him we return to searching and cleaning the house.
The idea that Dee assumes someone’s dying hits me deep down. We will be going on a trip in a pirate ship across deadly seas to an isle that is known to kill others. All because Cyro thinks it will be interesting to see it. I will need to tell Georgiann to write a book that does not take place in a dangerous place. Easy stuff for the baby dragon. Kevin Hopper can go to a field of bunnies and get attacked by something that doesn’t exist.
“Your mind wandered a bit there.” Dee points out for me. “I asked if you wanted some coffee.”
“No thanks.” With the place half way decent we have sat down for a short meal. Derrick put Melanie and her sister Katelyn on cooking detail. It seems the dragon family will be handling cooking and cleaning on board. Well everyone will do a level of cleaning. They will be the ones mostly doing that labor.
After the meal, we start waking up groggy crew with coffee and scones. It seems to be the best wake up. And soon after Cyro shows, Erin enters the house. It begins the massive start of the journey. I never knew anything about sailing before. I never wanted to. Boats and oceans and pirating were the last things on my mind growing up.
But with the navigator here, the Mad Hatters begin hauling all sorts of things on board. And it seems Dragon Magic will be valuable with keeping food stocks up and fresh. Cyro will not be the reliable one either. Dragon Derrick has my respect when he shows me how he does his work as cook. This will be no ordinary adventure.
Then again it was never ordinary.
